STREET THEATER
Street Theater is a staging of reclaimed chairs found on the streets of New York City, repaired and given a coat of taxicab yellow paint.
Arranged in 7 rows of 7, the installation mimics theater seating, with Times Square as its stage. As the plaza is occupied throughout the day, the chairs' movement and rearrangement becomes a performance about the ways in which people inhabit the public realm and shape it to suit their needs.
This urban ballet in one of the busiest public spaces in the world was documented in a time lapse video, illustrating the transition from a static arrangement of chairs to a field of dynamic patterns reflecting the fluid nature of public space. Sponsored by Times Square Arts for NYCxDesign week.
